National insurance
Important information you need to know before arriving
Every worker in the UK has a National Insurance number. It is used to keep track of social security contributions. If you earn more than £80 per week, then both you and your employer have to pay what are called National Insurance contributions. These are a kind of tax. Workers gain entitlements to various social security benefits in return for NI contributions. Paying National Insurance contributions in the UK can also help you build up entitlements in your home country. You will need a National Insurance (NI) number to work legally and you will need to apply for one when you first get a job.
